Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski has hinted that he plans to retire from football within the next two to three years, despite his scintillating form in La Liga.
The 35-year-old Polish forward has been in phenomenal goal-scoring form, netting 19 goals in 17 matches across competitions this season. His contract with Barcelona runs until 2026, with an option for a one-year extension.
In an interview with Forbes, Lewandowski acknowledged that his playing days are numbered. “At my age now, I know that soon – two, three years, I don’t know exactly – it will be done, it will be finished,” he said.
However, Lewandowski emphasised that he will call time on his illustrious career when he feels his passion waning. “I want to say, and only me, not anyone else, when the finish will be,” he stressed. “When I wake up one day and feel I don’t want to go to the training session, that will be the first moment to start thinking about retiring.”
Barcelona are already planning for life after Lewandowski, with sporting director Deco identifying potential successors like Victor Gyokeres and Erling Haaland.
Lewandowski’s legacy as one of football’s greatest goal scorers is already secure, with an astonishing 688 goals for club and country. His next challenge comes against Celta Vigo in La Liga.
